The NASCAR Hall of Fame

If I have learned nothing else in this life of mine, this I know: People are different (great revelation, huh). For instance, there are people who believe D. W. and the "boogity, boogity, boogity" trash is enjoyable. I find it as enjoyable as a wisdom tooth extraction where the doctor has to cut into the jawbone, all done withOUT pain killer. At least I have a "pain killer" for D.W. and that is the mute button on my remote.

Sorry about that first paragraph as I mean this to be a very positive post. For some reason I could not let the fact that D.W. is one of 25 people on the list for induction next year pass without adding my "two cents worth". I do most sincerely believe if he is inducted next year it is for the sole and only reason that his induction was "bought" by the D.W. money machine which, after all, is one thing NASCAR has shown repeated excellence in manipulating.

But, this I have also learned thanks to my membership here in Racers Reunion: we members have been honored for the past two years by being allowed to vote on inductees into the Memory Lane Museum Racers Reunion Hall of Fame in Mooresville, NC. I know this is not an easy task. Because I have been around racing for so many years and have been fortunate and blessed enough to meet and talk with almost every driver in most divisions of NASCAR, it is an almost impossible task to pick a limited number of nominees to actually be inducted. Just as this year's ballot for our Hall of Fame was filled with names, almost every single one of whom is more than justified to be an inductee, so it is with NASCAR and any other Hall of Fame. For instance, thanks to my employment with one of the top sports agents in the country before he died young of cancer in 1993, I became good friends with Harry Carson of the New York Giants Football team. It took Harry more than 10 years before the NFL inducted him and he is certainly one person who deserved that honor.

This year, when I was looking over our list of nominees, I was finding it very, very difficult to whittle down the list to the required number for my vote. Finally, after four days of deep thought, reflection, and other consideration, I marked my ballot and put it in the mail (I couldn't figure out how to vote on line) It was not easy. I'm sure it was not easy for any fan who voted. It just can't be done easily when there are so many factors to consider, at least in my mind.

Let's just take one example. Was Richard Petty inducted last year because:

1. He won 200 races

2. He set the racing world on its ear in 1967 winning 27 of 46 races and 10 in a row.

3. He has signed more autographs and there are dollars in the national debt.

4. He has been an ambassador for the sport throughout the world

5. He is the only person Muhammad Ali ever asked for an autograph (I heard this

several years ago reported by ESPN)

6. He has a great smile

7. He has been the epitome of a southern gentleman

8. He is the son of Lee Petty, one of the founders of the sport

9. He is the father of Kyle Petty

10.He has made Charlie 1 Horse the class of cowboy hats

11.......... well, you get the picture

So, as we prepare to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of a nation based on the concept of freedom, let's remember that we all are, for the most part, at least in theory, free to do, think, and feel, as we wish. We are different. That is a good thing. Don't get too rough on NASCAR when they pick their inductees (although I do believe they should go more than five a year). I know it is not easy.

But, if D.W. goes in this year, I will always wonder about that.

Tim

What a change! It's been awhile since I've checked in and I'm quite surprised. It may take me awhile to figure it our but first look it's really great.

I didn't like Darrell when he raced and I don't care for him as an announcer. He's a know-everything and horses around too much. Just my opinion and he would turn the hall of fame into the hall of shame. Bobby Allison needs to go in ahead of Darrell for sure.We had a baseball announcer for the Detroit Tigers pass away recently and when someone asked a reporter what made Ernie so great, the reporter said "Silence". He knew just when to talk and when to let the sounds of the game come through the broadcast. With today's announcers on Fox and TBS it's talk, talk, talk. Fill the air with needless chatter. I use the mute button more and more these days. 2 guys I really enjoy are Phil Parsons and Andy Petree (from espn) and I hope someday they can get together and do something together. At the cutaway car, leave Tim Brewer there. I like his explainations of how things work.

The only fox announcer I like is Mike Joy. Larry Mac and DW and all them guys are just too jumpy and get too excited. lol I also like Alan Bestwick, Barney Hall, Ken Squier, and Jerry Punch. Pete Banchoff said:

Raymond Parks should have gone in last year, not two Frances,. This year we need to get some early greats in before there is nobody left who remembers them. Jaws can wait a few years.

Frankly my dear.... any hall of fame that doesn't include Ray Hendrick and the Tant/Mitchell "Flying 11" Modified coupe couldn't possibly be a real NASCAR Hall of Fame anyway.

And while we're at it, there oughta be a place for Richard Howard, the man who saved both the Charlotte and Atlanta tracks, then saved NASCAR by having Junior Johnson build the Charlie Glotzbach Chevy... oh, and he arranged Dale Earnhardt's first Cup ride with Ed Negre. I'd argue nobody ever did more for NASCAR's fans. If it hadn't been for the efforts of Howard, the Charlotte and Atlanta venues would have been long gone by the time Bruton Smith decided to reappear.

I agree with you Richie Evans really deserves to be in the Hall Of Fame he was a great man and I am not just saying that because he was my brother in law He was a great driver from the beginning at Utica Rome Speedway.

I agree with everthing that's been said. As for both Frances going in and the possibily of DW going in,that reminds me of driving my son home from a little leage game. He said," the coach played his son the whole game and I'm ten times the catcher that he is". I just said," welcome to the real world son".

What I'd like to know is why Richie evans with all his accomplishments didn't get into the HoF. I'd like to see Jerry Cook get in as well.As for Darrell, I used to like him as a driver, but as an announcer, I have no love for him. As far as I'm concerned , Ned Jarrett is the best along with Benny Parsons, Eli Gold, and Winston Kelly when it comes to announcers. Maybe Darrell could learn something from Ned. However, I doubt it because he doesn't stop running his mouth long enough to listen to anyone. Robbie, I have to agree- Cale named him perfectly!

I never got to see Richie race- I was only 12 when he passed away and we went to races the races on DIRT tracks in Centrwal New York. I've heard so many stories about him and I've read the book about him.Maybe next year he will get in. Hopefully he can get enough fan votes to get a well deserved place in the HoF.

There is always going to be someone that deserves to be in that gets passed over. It is probably simillar to other HOF's. There have been many deserving individuals that waited for years to get in.

It is a numbers game and those with big numbers are going to carry alot of weight.

Certainly Richie Evans will get the nod at some point as few dominated they way Richie did.

DW is not very popular but 3 championships will not be overlooked. Pkl questioned Dale Inman's nomination but 8 championships as a crew chief puts him in the running. He will get in at some point.

Is the selection process fair ? Probably not and there is little that we can do about it.
