HISTORIC COLUMBIA SPEEDWAY NEWS

Administrative

A meeting was held tonight (January 12) concerning scheduling of the Fourth Annual Love Chevrolet Racers Reunion at The Historic Columbia Speedway in Cayce, South Carolina. Most of you are familiar with the history involved with the Speedway which includes, among other notables, the very first race driven by Richard Petty AND the very first win by Richard Petty in July, 1959. Many other historic events occurred at the half-mile facility that operated through the mid seventies. Mark your calendars NOW for Friday, April 6th and Saturday, April 7th. Tonight was just the preliminary meeting and there is much more to come. I'm sure others will be posting on this site as well but anyone is welcome to e-mail me at: legendtim83@yahoo.com and follow me on twitter at: legendtim83. Make plans to attend this event.

NASCAR Hall of Fame November Attendance Decline Not as Severe as Other Months in 2011

General

Randy, I have been pushing cooperation between HOF and RR since the Hall opened. This seems to be a perfect match. RR has many events where the HOF could be promoted very effectively. Columbia Speedway, Shelby Raceway, Hillsoborough just to name three off the top of my head. We really need to set up a meeting with the HOF folks and make this happen. The HOF is worth the effort and we have the folks here, as you said, the make a perfect match.

Dave, I deeply respect your opinion and I fully realize I don't know the inner workings or any of that. But I am still very happy I went that day and went with the folks I did. I fully agree it could be managed much, much better.

NASCAR Hall of Fame November Attendance Decline Not as Severe as Other Months in 2011

I will just say that 9 of those November attendees were from right here at this website, thanks to Randy Myers insistence that we visit. As I wrote at that time, it was well worth the trip and the money. I exchanged correspondence with one of the lower management guys there and we have had very cordial exchanges. I truly believe that if the HOF and RR could get together in a mutual marketing campaign, it would greatly benefit both organizations. As you may recall, I was a huge basher of the HOF BEFORE the visit, but having been there and observed what I did, I have a different opinion now. To see the pride of Randy Myers, Bill Rossi and France Flock in the exhibits on the third floor where the historical significance reigns, is enough for me.

AIR CONDITIONING IN A RACE CAR????---Have you ever!

Stock Car Racing History

I do remember, quite well, that the Pettys were experimenting with air conditioning in the early sixties. Couldn't get it to work properly but one of the races they did try it was The Southern 500 but I don't remember it being 1962. More like maybe '59 or '60.

1962 Southern 500 on youtube

Robert, I'm sure McKay was doing the commentary as it happened, or at least it certainly appears that way. Some of the sound effects, as you point out, had to be added, especially the sound of the Petty rim on the track which you could hear although he was all the way across the track from where the camera was located. But. all in all, for 1962, that was awesome tv!

Robert, the buzz in the infield, where I was, actually concerned the fact that everyone believe Richard Petty was leading the race until the left front tire blew going into turn one and he bounced off the wall a couple times but kept running the last two laps.. There were then several folks saying Junior was leading, some saying Larry Frank and a few believing that Richard was a lap ahead and still won the race by coming on around. One man near us was absolutely adamant that Larry Frank won the race and the guy was a Junior Johnson fan but he said he know Larry won it. Always impressed me that the old man knew Larry won and NASCAR couldn't figure it out until much later that night. I remember the races I attened back in those days much better than I remember my trips in the 80s and 90s. Guess that shows my age for real!

I have watched this twice and love it. I was at that race and this really brings back memories for me. I really like the way the cars look like they are really being DRIVEN rather than some radio controlled machines like today's cars seem to appear, at least on tv. I'm sure I'll watch this a few more times.
