Weaverville Race Results, May 19, 1963
A field of 42 cars showed up at the ½ paved Asheville-Weaverville Speedway seeking 36 staring positions for the 150 lap Modified–Sportsman race on May 19th, 1963.
Ken Rush of High Point, NC led qualifying with a speed of 86.830 mph. When the race started it was all about Rush, Runt Harris, and Pee Wee Griffin as they swapped the lead. Harris was able to lead a total of 63 laps including the last 24 laps to take the victory ahead of Griffin. The most spectacular incident of the day occurred when Perk Brown spun on the homestretch, and was hit by Paul Radford. Radford’s car rolled more than 5 times, and began to disintegrate as it rolled toward the 1st turn. Radford recalled on the Racing Through History radio show Tuesday night(9/28/2010) that this was the worst wreck of his career, and he spent 4 days in the hospital.
There were 3500 fans in attendance that day to witness Runt Harris collect $1000 for the victory.
