Martinsville M-S Results, Oct 22,1967
The first annual Cardinal 300 Modified-Sportsman race was held at the ½ paved Martinsville Speedway on October 22nd, 1967. There were 84 entries for the 300 laps event. Ed Flemke of Southington, CT led qualifying for the 40 starting spots with a speed of 81.595 mph, which was a new track record at the time. Donnie Allison driving a 1937 Modified Ford prepared by Glen Wood won the race by a 1-lap margin over Ray Hendrick. Lap leaders were: Donnie Allison, Bugs Stevens, and Ray Hendrick. There were 9 caution flags in the race including a first lap crash involving 7 cars with Freddie Fryar’s car ending up on it’s top. At the finish there were 19 cars of the original starters taking the checkered flag. Allison won $1650.00 for the victory before 10,500 fans on a warm October Sunday afternoon.
