Trenton Race Results, Aug.23,1964
The 2nd annual Trenton 200 Modified-Sportsman race was held on a hot 96 degree Sunday afternoon on August 23rd, 1964. The event was a one-day show with qualifying held the morning of the race. There were almost 100 entries for this Nascar event that was billed as: “Nascar vs. Open Completion – All Driver Welcome”.
Sonny Hutchins won the pole, with Ray Hendrick starting on the outside, and Joe Kelly starting 3rd.
Joe Kelly driving the Don House Modified Ford won the event by taking the lead from Perk Brown with 2 laps to go. Kelly drove the race with a broken hand before 14,000 fans and won $2500 for the victory from the $12000 purse.
Carl Burris’s, and Bill Slater’s cars both caught fire during pit stops. One of Burris’s crewmembers was severely burned by the fire.
One of the hottest drivers in the Northeast at the time was Jackie McLaughlin who drove most of the race in relief for Ray Cook. Later that same evening in another race in Nazareth, PA McLaughlin lost his life in an on track accident.
