The 6th annual Sun Fun 101 Modified-Sportsman race was held at Rambi Raceway in Myrtle Beach on June 8th, 1963. Mutt Powell of Hemingway, SC won the 101-lap event over the ½ mile clay oval. Powell was driving a Marion Cox prepared Modified Ford. There were 4 caution flags in the event with the most serious being one involving Ernest Eury of Concord, NC. Eury’s
#78 1940 Modified Ford made contact with another car, and flipped in the air landing on it’s top. Eury was taken to Ocean View Memorial Hospital with internal injuries. He was released a few days later. Mutt Powell took home $500.00 for the victory before a reported crowd of 3,000 fans.
