The annual Modified-Sportsman race held at Daytona was increased to a 300-mile event for 1966. This was also the first year that Permatex became the title sponsor. Cale Yarborough led qualifying with a lap speed of 173.076 mph. During the race the lead changed 17 times among 8 different drivers. Lap leaders were: Curtis Turner, Cale Yarborough, Darel Dieringer, Bobby Allison, Donnie Allison, Tiny Lund, Marvin Panch, and LeeRoy Yarbrough. This was Curtis Turner’s first ever win at Daytona. There were 20 cars running at the finish. Turner took home $7,100.00 for the victory before 40,000 fans.

turner's car sported one of the prettiest paint schemes that i've ever seen on a race car. i have the 1-64th scale RCCA model of the car.
