The annual season ending Southern 200 was held at the ½ dirt Wilson County Speedway on Sunday November 10th, 1974.Time trials were held on Saturday where 52 cars made runs to get a starting spot in the 36-car field. Al Grinnan of Fredericksburg, VA won the pole position, with Donnie Head starting on the outside front row. Dennis Smith of Goldsboro, NC took the lead just past lap 100, and held that position to the end. The second place finisher, Bud Elliott was the only other driver in the lead lap at the finish. The race was scheduled for 200 laps, but because of a rule that required the final 10 laps to be run under the green flag, the race actually ended on lap 203. Dennis Smith took home $2000.00 for the victory.

Hey Jack, I lived in wilson from 68-73 and went to school there at Atlantic Christian now known as Barton college. I had my racing career at WCS. It consisted of 3 laps of practice in a 60ford that we had to put more oil into than gas. LOL. I was ok until they put the late models out there while I was puttin aroundWhen farmer john mathews, bill taylor and don macon come power sliding by me at full speed I figured I liked it betterin the pits or grandstands.Donnie head was a local guy. he was there pretty often. Milton upchurch was either from wilson or elm city which was there in wilson county. Pitner was another local guy.I really enjoy you putting these rundowns up. thanks

Milton Upchurch was from Elm City, NC. Durwood Peele, who later briefly promoted Wilson and lost his life when his fuel tank exploded was from Goldsboro, NC. I lived in Wilson from 1970-1980 and was at this event.
