Dennis, that is indeed me and you caught me without my ever present racetrack prescription sunglasses on. I guess the photographer had me take them off for the pictures.

That day was Wrangler's first-ever race sponsorship. Little did we know that before the year was over we'd sign a contract with the winning car owner, Bud Moore, for our Wrangler driver, Dale Earnhardt, to replace Benny in Bud's car for 1982.

The "Wrangler Man" is L.A. actor, Ray Colbert , who at the time was also doing Buick television commercials without the glued on mustache he used as the "Wrangler Man." He was not the same actor who portrayed the Marlboro Man.

Where on earth did you find that photo?

Winter of 1984 I met Kyle Petty in Fort Lauderdale and we did a deal for southeastern 7-Eleven franchisees at the community college. It had a rising stage in the auditorium that we unveiled a race car on. Afterwards we had lunch in a hospitality tent on an athletic field. I was wearing yellow golf pants (I don't play golf) and Kyle grabbed me out of the food line. Both of my pants legs were covered in fire ants. Ran across the field to a restroom coming out of those pants at the same time. Kyle shook the ants from my pants while I doused my legs in water!

DAVE,
TODAY'S RACE FANS DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS IS?
LAST TIME I SEEN ONE IS 1986 RACE TRACK BROCHURE.
GOT YOUR PHOTO FROM AN SEPT.12, 1982 RICHMOND FAIRGROUNDS RACEWAY RACE TRACK BROCHURE.

DAVE,

THE ABOVE PHOTO OF YOU IN VICTORY LANE.

#1 DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE "VICTORY LANE, WINSTON IS TASTE, RICHMOND FAIRGROUNDS RACE" METAL SIGN.

#2. WHEN WAS IT PUT UP AND WHEN WAS IT TAKEN DOWN?
Thanks for any information or photos posted.

Dennis, thanks for the brochure photos. I don't know when that victory lane sign was erected. That victory lane disappeared when Paul enlarged the track in 1988 and victory lane ceremonies started taking place in the grass between pit road and the front stretch.

Dennis, another thing about that brochure. Dan Henley at RJR/Winston in Winston-Salem paid for it and we printed it at our Wrangler printing facility in Greensboro and shipped them to Richmond for distribution. Another example of the huge budgets Winston provided behind the scenes that no longer is available for tracks to tap.

How about a $18 Winston Cup reserved grandstand ticket and a $15 unreserved grandstand ticket?! Paul Sawyer was definitely not getting rich on what he charged race fans for tickets.
