J. D. "Slick" Johnson III
Slick Johnson, the son of veteran driver/builder/car owner Junior Johnson of Florence. . C. pretty much grew up in a race car shop and became a sensational driver in the 60's. He learned the ins and outs of driving from his father and uncle, Cecil Johnson. He cut his teeth on dirt tracks in the Carolinas and graduated on to asphalt and was a terror on any track he drove. He moved up to the Grand National division of NASCAR and participated with a very limited budget, After three years, he dropped down to ARCA and in one of the races at Daytona, the young Johnson was involved in a crash that took his life.
