I have been at many a track when lights have failed...sometimes all of them. It happens in all sports.

Big Race for Drivers Who Couldn't Get a Ride?

General

What does west coast have to do with it? Charlotte had the Red Hot Chili Peppers a few years ago. Not all NASCAR fans are stereotypical country music fans.

Heat Races VS Time Trials

General

The driver's don't want heat races in the upper classes. They would rather qualify, start straight up and chase to the finish. On the dirt tracks without a good prep program, a train race usually occurs.

Sad news: death of Johnny Hayes

General

Very sad news. He helped many a racer along the way that many don't know about. We were among those touched by his generosity. Prayers and Blessings to the family.

Junie Donlavey - King of the Rent - A - Racers - Not Just in Cup

General

I was at the Columbia race that Baker won. I am not positive, but either this Columbia race or one around that time Cale ran 2nd returning from his brief foray into USAC Champ car racing

Dismal New Numbers for Sinking NASCAR Hall of Fame

General

There is a big difference when it comes to motorsports. The world doesn't revolve around NASCAR, though many think it should. They were late to the table. We are talking racing and they basically dumped the Joe Weatherly Museum. It has it liabilities of course, but there are so many other racing museums. The open wheel people have been much better at representing their history. The various sports halls of fame have, with few exceptions, done a good job representing their sport. Racing is much to diverse.

PERHAPS THE LEGEND DOESN'T BELONG HERE AFTER ALL

General

What is disgusting is that there are fools out there who think it is funny to imitate the garbage that I hear is from that movie. First it was Austin Hubbard ( who is a really good kid and talented driver) when he won his first World of Outlaws late model race and more recently a preacher who ought to know better.

J.D. “Junior” Johnson 1927 - 2011

-RacersReunion® OUTREACH

He will be truly missed. JR was a fine racer on dirt and asphalt (as was Slick). I watched those cats run many a night at Hartsville-Darlington, Timmonsville, and a trip or two to Columbia (and many others) and they were a tough bunch to beat. I helped a team that used Jr's machine shop for a while. Jr helped out many a race team through his machine shop over the years when it was needed. Jr did a lot to help further Slick's ambitions in Cup, but they were terribly underfunded. They still had 7 top 10's over 3 years and were quite competitive in many races. It used to tickle me to see Jr leave Timmonsville with a problem early in the program, dash back to the shop (which was only a few miles away) and return in time for the feature.

Question on dirt track open wheel modified racing in south and when did it become popular again

General

Thanks Jeff, maybe you explained part of it better than me. I didn't want to get into the UMP and IMCA thing as I am not sure how familiar some folks here are with that. I remember when NASCAR allowed the change in the asphalt modifieds from the coupes into the Pinto, Valiant, Vega style bodies. The Cavalier looking style was predominate in later years. We had the Southern Modified tour down here that was separate from NASCAR for many years and then did one of the ASA concepts for a period and now are NASCAR again. Up North there has always been the NASCAR National Modified tour. Other tracks run asphalt modifieds as well.

Jimmy Owens was hell on wheels in the e-mod (where I first saw him at the Gap) as well as in the Late Models now. Terrific cat too.
