What if Certain Drivers had Stayed in NASCAR Longer?

General

Wow, thanks for posting this. So many NASCAR fans today are unaware of some of the greats that were mentioned in this clip. Only after watching this was I struck by the amount of talent and skill that is missing from the racing today. Sure we have Johnson, Gordon, Kennseth and Stewart, but can imagine the racing ifsome ofthose memtioned in the clip were still here and running with the greats of today. Thanks for the memories.

When Did "Alternate" Starters Disappear in NASCAR?

General

It was part of the sport for years but I to never gave it much thought when it dissappeared. I do remember that Tiny Lund was the 1st alternate for the race he was killed in. Seems Grant Adcox withdrew after blowing an engine, I think, and Tiny got the start only to perish on lap seven in a multicar crash on the backstretch at Talladega.

I HAVE THE ANSWER. IT'S SIMPLE AND INEXPENSIVE

General

Thanks for the info Tim. I've never used the nexus products so I looked it up. Looks like a great product. I still have questions and the internet is full of pros and cons, so I don't know what to believe. I'd like to try it but I don't like to order off the net for fear of getting scammed. Do you know of any chains that carry the Nexus products?

Seems very clear to me. Menard took a dive.

My question is how can Helton say he heard nothing? I can't think of any other situation where a car 80 laps down would be talking to his crew cheif abount "do we or don't we need a caution". Told several times "Don't need a caution, 29 has the lead." Then after the lead is lost Menard is told "Paul check your volts" to which he replies "Why". Then a private conversation with Mike Dillon and he claims to have a flat and spins, but the tires is not flat. I don't like this kind of teamwork. I'm sure it has happened before but it just doesn't seem right.

Mike Dillon can say anything he wants but it is very clear something is up with the Menard spin at Richmond. 80 laps down, I bet he was told to take a dive. What do you think?

Paul Menard's radio chatter at Richmond has come into question.
(Getty Images)

Here is a rundown of radio communication over the final 60 laps between Menard, spotter Stevie Reeves and crew chief Slugger Labbe:

With 61 laps to go, Menard is told, 29 [Harvick] is leading by two seconds, do not need a caution.

A few moments later, Menard asks, Do not need a caution, correct? Hes told no.

With 28 laps to go, Menard is told, 24 and the 29 are racing each other hard right now. Two laps later, Menard says to his spotter, Stevie, talk to me.

29 is leading by three-tenths right now, Reeves replies. Were good right now .

Six laps later, Menard is told Gordon has taken the lead from Harvick. Moments later, a fourth voice Mike Dillon, general manager of Richard Childress Racing comes on the radio asking, Slugger, can you go to channel 2?

(Teams have a second radio frequency available, usually used in cases when the first one fails.)

Four laps later, Menard chimes in, Think I got a right-rear going down. Within moments, he spins onto the infield grass. TV showed the tire was not down.

Dismal New Numbers for Sinking NASCAR Hall of Fame

General

I've been to the HOF and I was impressed and truely enjoyed my visit. I purchased a yearly pass but haven't been back but my son has returned 3 times since our first visit. What is the problem? Where are the fans? What should we expect for attendance? Tough questions with no easy answers.

The problem, as I see it. is shared by several issues. The first in my eyes is the location. I hate drivingon congested streets with limited parking. I understand that it was important to have the HOF in an area with lots of foot and auto traffic, but that is one of the reasons I haven't been back. The cost of the ticket is another thing I see as a deterrent. Another thing is the limit of material to rotate and place on display.A majority of the items on display will be there for many, many years or maybe forever. I have very fond memories of the many stops at the Joe Weatherly SCM at Darlington. It shared many of the same issues as the HOF, but when I was much younger I could stop there every year on my way to the beach, and did. I loved looking at the same Olcars and uniforms, the photos and the many racing items. The difference between the two locations are many. The HOF, Downtown Charlotte. JWSCM, beside Darlington Raceway. Parking at the HOF is chaotic and intimidating, and costly. At the JWSCM the parking is free and right in front of the racetrack.

Let me asure everyone that I love the NASCAR Hall of Fame and I will return. I just don't have the tug to return many times each year. I plan to go once each year to see the Ring of Honor and soak up the history of this great sport. Should we expect more from most fans, I don't think so.

What'd They Pay that Bristol Scoreboard Guy?

General

I posted this photo last year and wondered the same thing. Great shot. Looking in the window Fireball looks cool as can be. My elbows and hands would be going everywhere.
