Question of the Day for March 31, 2011 Local Short Tracks

General

Ok, race fans, for discussion today, the following questions:

1. Do you have a local short track near you that will be racing soon?

2. Do you attend those local events?

3. What does YOUR local short track do that is "right" to keep fans coming?

4. What does YOUR local short track do that is "wrong" to get fans back?

I plan to do a Legendtorial on Racing Through History next Tuesday night on this very subject of support our local short tracks. I have my own opinions about what the do right and wrong as far as I AM CONCERNED. But, being the opinionated old man that I am, I am open to hearing what all of you have to say.

Ok, I'm looking forward to your thoughts. Every question I have posted over the past couple weeks has received excellent responses and I appreciate each and every one of you who takes the time to respond.

Tim

I swear, under oath, this is true. WIS-TV early morning News

General

While I am already anticipating a positive spin on this report from some happy for such adventures, I was amused, befuddled, and aggrevated about a report on the early News of TV 10 in Columbia. Along with video of a Daytona race from the late 90s it appeared, it was announced that Daytona International Speedway has applied to the State of Florida for a permit to build a facility on site at the speedway to house the ashes remains of race fans that want to be interred enternally at the "Birthplace of Speed" (their words, not mine). If you can pull that clip up, you should watch it. Such concern is expressed by Daytona officials that many fans long for the eternal rest at the track as it was so much a part of their lives, expressed with such "concern" as to reflect the intense care the Daytona folks have for fans.

I can hardly imagine the charge for "urn space". But you have to admire the imagination of the Daytona guy who thought this up. Not only do they get to charge you for the urn space, but they get to charge family members each time they come to visit.

Yes, I realize it's an individual's choice, and yes I realize there are probably plenty ready to take them on that, I still find it odd to know that not only are certain individuals in that Daytona area trying to suck the life out of the sport, they are now trying to make a profit off the very fans they are seeking to disenfranchise.

Forgive me, I just don't get this one, although I used to say I wanted my coffin to be Petty Blue and STP red with a big STP sticker on it. Even those days are gone.

Question of the Day for March 30, 2011

General

What do you think? Too much coverage of racing with all the pre-race, post-race, during the race shows on tv? When I was growing as a race fan (50s and 60s), getting racing news was difficult. If our local newspaper carried anything at all on anything other than Darlington, it was a paragraph or two at best and finishing order lists usually did only the top five. When Joe Whitlock and Jim Hunter came along as writers for The State Newspaper, things improved greatly. Both were excellent writers and both loved the sport. Jim McLaren was the latter day writer and he was most excellent then The State decided they could do this with wire reports and we lost Jim.

These days race day coverage starts before the cock crows and continues late into the night with so many "talking heads" and "racing experts", that every possible subject is covered. Having so much time to fill leads to many discussions and conversations that border on ridiculous. What do you folks think about the coverage? Too much? Do you want more in a particular area? What would you change? I'm looking forward to the responses. Thank you.

Question of the Day for March 29,2011

General

There was almost a heated discussion between the Speed Channel's three pre-race talking heads (Wallace, Petty and Roberts) Sunday about how the Media and NASCAR is taking ALL the Camping World Truck Series, Nationwide and Cup victories of Kyle Busch to push him to 66 wins overall. The topic was that Kyle will soon move into third behing The King and the Silver Fox on the NASCAR all time win list if he keeps racing all three series. While I admit I had problems with young Mr. Busch and his attitudes, he has matured now (even if it took pressure from the sponsor to accomplish that) and I admit, obviously, the young man has driving talent running out of those big Busch ears, but I have a huge problem adding ALL wins together and equating that to the accomplishments of those who have the Cup wins. That indicates, look out D.W., your buddy is coming after you. NASCAR wouldn't let Bobby Allison rightfully move ahead of you, but Kyle is coming.

Ok, folks, what's your take on adding ALL wins together?

Question of the Day for March 28, 2011

Ok, folks, let's discuss tracks. What is your favorite all time race track, whether still in operation or not, and why. You don't have to have attended a race there, maybe just watched on tv, but give us a favorite and the reason why.

Looking for 1977 Firecracker 400 program

Current NASCAR

It is highly possible that I have a copy. I'll have to check my storage and that, in itself, will be a mammoth task because I have programs and racing magazines stored back to the 50s and in no certain order. Lack of organization. I'll see what I can do, toomuch, but it will take awhile.

Question of the day for March 27, 2011

General

While attending the Legends Helping Legends event at The Memory Lane Museum in Mooresville, NC yesterday, I engaged in conversation with a young man, about 16 maybe, while standing in front of the 1969 Ford Torino number 43 driven by The King in 1969. The young man tells me how plain that car looks compared to those of today. Then, surprisingly, he tells me he likes that car better than anyone he's ever seen. Further conversation led to the revelation that he has been a fan since 2007, so all he's ever really seen are the sponsor-wrapped and colorful cars that all look alike except for the decals, colors and numbers. Got me to thinking (yeah I know that's dangerous) and I thought that I would ask you folks today to tell me what is you ALL TIME FAVORITE race car along with a little explanation as why you find that car appealing to you. I admit, this would not be an easy response for me to I'm glad to be asking the question! Can't wait to hear your answers.

Question of the day for March 25, 2011

Hello all. Today's discussion is a little different, but not that much. Please tell us whether or not you have ever met your favorite driver, past or present, face-to-face, and if so, was he who/what you thought he was? Were you impressed? Did you come away with a good feeling? Give us the details. Is there a driver from the past you haven't met but wish you could have, or, if that driver is still around, wish you still could meet him?
