Mutt Powell of Hemingway, SC dominated the Southern 200 Late Model Sportsman race held at the Wilson Co. Speedway on October 29th, 1972. There were 52 drivers on hand for time trials trying to secure one of the 31 starting spots for the race. Al Grinnan from Fredericksburg, VA started on the pole driving a 1966 Chevelle while the outside front row went to Mutt Powell in his yellow
#88 1968 Chevelle. Powell finished 2 laps ahead of the second place finisher earning $2000 for his victory.
