Southern National Speedway still in mothballs for the time being

General

I hear they are trying to negotiate a deal, maybe with more than one party. they can place all the tax value on the place they want, but the reality is,it is still a race track in the middle of farm country.I think 800-900k just might get it done, but who knows other than the bank folks. There is quite a bit of work to be done to get it race ready.I think the entertainment license is no longer valid since no race was run last year.I think that will have to be re-applied for by new owners. I heard all of the radio equipment, tech shed tools, and numerous other things are all gone. There were some problems with the sewer system when it was open before, not sure if all that has been resolved. I would think these things along with the struggling economy and current picture of short track racing in general have all contributed to devaluation of SNRP. I sure would like to see someone capable of running it gets their hands on it. Bring back the super late models and maybe have an occasional vintage race. It really is a great place to spend a Saturday night.

Southern National Speedway still in mothballs for the time being

General

I have learned from a reliable source that the bank turned down the winning bid for Southern National Speedway. It is a no sale as of this time. Hopefully a sale can be negotiated soon so racing can resume in the spring.

OK Jerry, you have my attention, find me a 57 front end,a pair of doors from a 58 and a 59 rear clip and I will have it hung on a late model chassis in time for next racing season,Southern Ground Pounder Style!

Chime in please: Kyle Busch/Elliott Sadler

General

I have never questionedKyle'sability to wheel the car,it's the personality and just plain being a smart aleck (best I could do under the rules of ingagement)and not very humble that I don't like. I second the motion PK, I sure do miss guys like Neil. Klye brings all this on himself most of the time, he knows that microphone is about as hot as a branding iron when they throw it in his face and he gives some smart aleck remark. It just get's the media going and they are looking for the story.! He sure wasn't raised in the south.

Oh well,we like Caraway too, challenging track in a beautiful setting. It should be a good time! Hope to see you there.

Earnhardt & Robert Gee Cleaned House at Wilson in 1977

Dave, thanks for sharing this with everyone. I read this when it first came out and it really is easy to understand why Mr Hendricks replaced Kyle with Dale Jr. Sometimes it is just plain more about the person than about their ability to drive.

Fast Cars, Family and Fainting Goats

Thank you very much Dave for sharing this. It is truly so much fun to learn about the person instead of just another race car driver. I just become a David Ragan fan for sure just because of the type of person he is,country folk! I really could care less if he ever wins another race although I will be pulling for him,it is good to know he is one of the good guys. A big salute to Ken and Beverly for raisiing him right and thank you to grandma for the prayers. They really do help.

Stock Car Racing History

How do we suppose things would stack up,if lets say Jimmie Johnson,Jeff Gordon, and some of the other Cup drivers had ventured into the lower series after they got to the Cup level? I think that is what has made Jimmie a 5 time Champ is his ability to focus on the task at hand in the Cup series. Maybe if Kyle would stick to the Cup series then maybe he just might be as good as some think he is. Maybe that is why Mark Martin was never able to achieve the ultimate goal of a championship.Mark is probably one of the best wheel men I have ever seen. I truly believe he had too many irons in the fire. The same may be true for Kyle. Only time will tell but as I see it so far he could learn a lot from the past. I don't care how good of a wheel man he is,he is not Superman. That many laps, that many races, takes a toll on even the best over the length of a race season. Maybe he will prove me wrong, but I have my doubts about anyone winning a Cup championship while racing in all 3 series as much as Kyle does. It is proving to be a pretty tough task with Jimmie In the cup series.Kevin Harvick ran a lot of lower series races last year but came up short in the Cup series.I don't really care how many races Kyle wins in the trucks and Naionwide cars. Both of the series are not loaded with the talent that the Cup series is.I am not suprised when he wins on the undercard, only suprised when he gets beat in the series down below. I can remember folks saying Jeff Gordon was going to blow away the titles won record of Richard and Dale. I said no way then and it looks like the sun is starting to set on Jeff's chances of winning 3 more titles, much less blowing the record away and Kyle hasn't even won his first title yet. He has won 22 cup races and will undoubtedly win many more but he is a long, long way from rewriting any history. I think time might just run out on him too unless he changes his mode of operation.

Kyle Busch Ticketed; 128 in 45 mph Zone

General

I really do not care who did it,you,me, Kyle Busch,Curtis Turner, it does not matter. It is a total disreguard for others. So what,we already know he can drive fast. What was he trying to prove by doing this? it is excessive carelessness and he deserves to be punished severely, just like you or I would. Another lawyer is going to get richer and justice will once again slip away in the balance of those who can pay their way! That's how it is in America folks.

Racers,

I stopped reading these entries when I finished Ms. Lilley's contribution. She's right and I want to add to it. I pull harder than anyone against Kyle Busch everytime he races. But what he did pales in comparison to the antics of Curtis Turner and many of his peers back in the 50s and 60s. I was a big fan of Curtis Turner, however, his well-documented escapades in the air and on land are in another strata from KB. Those of us who spend so much time on this websitehonoring the pioneers of stock car racing really shouldn't be too hard on young KB. While I do not in any way condone his speeding, he wasn't even drinking as fas as I've heard andonce again falls short of those that laid the foundation for this sport and that type of behavior. Tim, you gotta tell meyour 137 mph story some day.

The Other Side of NASCAR

General

Jeff,I think you have hit it dead on. We are definitly part of the past and notthe future as far as the fan base is concerned. I have come to understand that since Big Bill left us,it will never be the same. The difference between Big Bill and Baby Brian is,Big Bill loved a good raceand Baby Brian loves a good dollar. Somewhere along the line Brian and Company figured out how to extract those dollars from the paying public and corporate America. Somewhere inbetween Big Bill,Little Bill and Baby Brian the money became more important than the love of racing.

Jeff Gilder said:

I read this, I think from your email, PKL. I too agree and have thought for some time the future of NASCAR would have to include PPV. Where else can they turn with declining ticket sales and less-than-favorable TV ratings? It does seem they are staffing up for more "show" and "marketing the show" related tasks that will most assuredly take them even further from the roots we enjoyed. Many of us seem to hang on to some sort of hope that someone will awaken some Monday and realize we and and millions of other old-school fans have wandered away wondering what happened to the sport, and that someone will begin the process of putting things back together for us. I don't think the future holds any hope of those folks, even for a moment, wondering where we may have wandered and why. They are in search of an entirely different fan. After all, most of us are no longer part of that ever-so-popular 18 - 35 year old demographic. For now, we are not their concern. They have noticed our departure and have with purpose, chosen their path.
