Guess Danica (and NASCAR) need the Wizard of Oz

No, Johnny, I didn't hear an answer other than someone saying there was no way to do it and, it appears, they were right.

Funny sort of thing that the story of the Wizard of Oz begins with Dorothy in Kansas. According to all the Danica supporters, so did her climb to the top of NASCAR's ladder. But Wait! What is this I'm hearing???? If what I read, saw, and heard tonight is correct, Danica will NOT be in the All-Star Race at Charlotte tomorrow night. Seems a young man beat her out in the fan vote and she was unable to make the field any other way. So, for tomorrow night, "Go Daddy" will be "Gone Daddy". I'm sure NASCAR is fuming over this omission. Guess D.W. will have to talk about Toyotas and "June Bug" since his Babe in underwear won't be running.
Vicki, it is so wonderful to have you on the site. Your Dad is well remembered by many on this site, if not personally, by the wonderful reputation he has in racing. Glad to have you here to share some personal memories.
Great piece Patrick.
As for the traffic situation, thinking back to that first World 600 in 1960, seems to me the traffic situation was awful. My uncle Bobby was driving and I was just looking. The only big track I had been too before Charlotte was Darlington and the difference in the two was huge. I took the grandsons to the 600 in 2011 and finally got out of the parking lot at 2:30 a.m. Got the boys home at 4:30 a.m. That was a long day and although I enjoyed it because I had all three grandsons at their first race, I was worn out for a week trying to catch up. I won't even talk about the cost of getting each one of them their "personal pizza" from concessions. Ann still doesn't know I had to take out a second mortgage to pay for concessions. But the boys loved it and we had a great time so it was worth it to me.
The racing "grapevine" is alive and well, thankfully. I've already had two calls about Mrs. Day contacting Frances Flock to advise the event, an annual affair, which was scheduled for June 1st, will go on as scheduled. What a fitting way to honor Mr. J.B. Day.
There will be no event on Saturday, May 31st, but the usual happenings are set for Sunday.
My thoughts, prayers, and condolences to "Chief" and the rest of the family on the loss of Patricia. This past six weeks has to have been very difficult for all the Pettys. I know we all feel the loss of someone so close to the sport we all love. Dave mentions she was the daughter of Red Myler, something I didn't know. Of the three that went to the first race Richard drove at Columbia Speedway in 1958, Red was one. Richard and Dale Inman were the other two.
And I was very happy to see Jeff win. Going to be an interesting "Chase" this year even if I don't care for the Chase.
I'm happy she had a good run. Even happier she didn't hit anything or any body.
That is very interesting. I did not see that but it does add a dimension to the politically correct b.s. that NASCAR seeks to embrace.
Of this you can be assured: I will NOT, under any circumstances, pull for any of that Jap Crap. If Richard Petty Motorsports goes that route, I will not continue to hold out the sentimental hope that the number 43 will return to Victory Lane. Sorry, Richard, after 1969 and the Ford deal, I learned to accept that you needed to change brands to Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile and back to Ford to win races and as long as it was you doing it I was ok with it. I cannot, however, support a Petty Toyota.
I did not have such things to worry about when you were racing, Richard, because NASCAR racing in the Grand National Division was open to AMERICAN made cars. No longer is that true and of all makes to come rushing in was Toyota. From the first debut with MWR, it was cheating at Daytona. How interesting that TRD builds all racing engines for the series.
Before all the "wiser than I" blowhards want to come in an yell how some Fords are build in Mexico and Chevys are build outside the U.S., those are American Companies. The same blow hards who will claim their all knowing ability that Toyota are build in the U.S., consider this:
1. Before my Uncle Bobby died, I had to take him to a Toyota dealership to visit one of his old auto salesman friends. As he visited with his friend, I looked at all the Toyotas in the showroom, about 11 of them, and all but ONE was build in Japan.
2.Toyota set up shop in areas where they could obtain cheap labor without having to deal with Unions.
3. Using the famous NASCAR quote, "at the end of the day", the profits from sales end up in Japan.
While I realize that Toyotas build here add to employment and the tax base of some locales, with concessions given to the manufacturer, how much more is lost by such things.
Yes, I know I'm beating a silent drum which only I hear, but I will continue to beat that drum for me. NASCAR racing is, or at least was, my sport. Japan is a country with a history of atrocities throughout history. Some things I am not willing to forget.
That's my say on this subject. I will NOT cheer for a Toyota and I will NOT cheer for Danica Patrick. So there.
