FROM THE MOUTH OF "WILD THING"
Stock Car Racing History
If he is really sorry, that leaves only one thing for him to do from here on out; prove it on the track. Race smarter, control himself, be a better sport and stay focused.
Racing is a dangerous sport. PERIOD. Always had been and always will be. That is a frustrating fact and I think it should never be taken for granted. But we can always rest assure that advances in safety have been made over the years. After Earnhardt's wreck alot of safety measures were put into place. Just ask Jimmie Johnson after last night or Michael McDowell after that wreck at Texas. I mean NASCAR has done enough. The question is, has IRL done enough??
I am sure IRL will consider some changes in safety after this. I do not think they are doing enough. HANs devices, taller fences and safety barriers can only do so much. But something needs to be done to make the cars safer. You are putting very fast light cars on really large tracks. The slightest margin of error can be disastrous. As a fan i want to see drivers and fans safe when i am at a race. I think that is what everyone wants.
To the fans who cheered when Johnson hit the wall. GROW UP!! Regardless if you like Johnson or not, it is pathetic to cheer for him to hit the wall like that. He is lucky he was able to walk away from that with no injuries or worse. Most of the time I am critical of NASCAR but this time I want to thank the good people at NASCAR for mandatory HANs devices, full face helmets and safety barriers. In the wake of the fatal Wheldon crash I think we are all once again reminded about the risks drivers take everytime they strap into racing a car. The risk of injury and death is always there. It is just sick for someone to cheer for crashes like that. Its not the right time to do that.
Sure, feel free to boo or cheer your drivers in driver introductions but when another human being is in a bad wreck show some respect. The only time you should cheer is when the driver gets out of the car alright. These kinds of fans annoy me. I can remember there was a driver at one of my local tracks who used to dominate. He hits the wall really hard. Fans all cheer. Well I hope they all felt like crud because after that he broke his wrist and retired.
Lets all remember that these are human beings just like you and me. They all have families, friends and lives like everyone else. How dare people cheer for them to get into crashes.
With all the fascination with video games you would think with racing games it would perhaps generate interest in motorsports. But it's not. Sadly people are not going out to local races. As I have said before, I blame the increasing popularity of the home theatre. People rather be at home I guess. Not to mention when you got other sports that are popular that are competing on the same night. Right now with college football and the NFL, there lies your competition. NASCAR is struggling to compete with that too. This and combined with a lagging economy, its not good.
I love the bit when Stewart was asked by a reporter if he thought NASCAR was too safe.
His answer
"Well, I can say that the media center is getting boring in here because it is too safe in here because you guys got four legs on your chairs so we start sawing legs off. What do you think about that? You like that idea? Are you paying attention? What do you think?"
