The annual “Beach 96” Modified-Sportsman race was held at the ½ dirt Rambi Raceway in Myrtle Beach on August 11,1962. The race had a purse of $2100, and attracted some of the best drivers from North, and South Carolina. Earl Moss from Creedmoor, NC led the first 51 laps before making a pit stop. Moss returned to the track without loosing a lap, but had to work his way through the field to get to the leader, Dink Widenhouse. Several laps later Moss was on Dink’s bumper, and attending to pass when the two cars got together in turn four. Widenhouse, and Moss made contact a second time on the straightaway. Widenhouse managed to win the race driving the Marion Cox
#50. After the race Earl Moss said “I believe Dink did it on purpose, coming down on me in the forth turn”. Dink Widenhouse was quoted as saying “ I don’t know what Dink is talking about. This is the first race I’ve won in over 2 years, and this cry baby stuff is poor sportsmanship on Earl’s part”.
