Manassas Results, Jun 26,1971
Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, VA was the site of the June 26th, 1971 Nascar Late Model Sportsman race over the 3/8 mile paved track. The 100-mile race title was “The Bill Bogley Gold Trophy Race”. Bogley was a Bethesda, MD Lincoln–Mercury dealer that helped promote the race raising the purse to $25000 made up of cash, and prizes. On race day there were 60 entries in the pits trying for the 30 starting positions. Tommy Ellis of Richmond won the pole driving a 1966 Chevelle. When the race started Sonny Hutchins grabbed the lead. By lap 25 it was a 3-way battle for the lead by Hutchins, Hendrick, and Hensley. Ray Hendrick won the battle by taking the checkered flag on lap 267 taking home $1500 for the victory.
Check out Harry Gant in a 57 Chevy
a year or 2 later Gant won the National Boh 200 at Beltsville in a 57 chevy!
Paul - Do you have any full field race results before 1974 from any of the big races at Beltsville ?I've been searching for some, but so far I have not come up with any. Harry Gant won the 1971 National Boh 200 at Beltsville driving a 57 Chevy on 9/3/71, but so far I've only been able to come up with the top 10 out of the 30 car field. ...... Jack
Jack, in the late 60s and early 70s Beltsville staged a HUGE annual twin NASCAR Late Model Sportsman and NASCAR Modified race in October named the "Indian Summer Classic." They were covered pretty good a couple of times in Stock Car Racing magazine. One of the members like Dennis Andrews might have a copy featuring those races. The Baltimore Sun and Hagerstown, MD newspapers back in the day covered those events.
Jack, This story in Tri-State Speed Press, posted by winner Eddie Royster's son, Johnny, contains the top-10 of the big September 1970 200 lap NASCAR National Championship Late Model Sportsman race at Beltsville. Also, our member, N.B. Arnold used to shoot for Tri-State back in the day and might have issues with Beltsville results.
By Phil SmithOn October 30, 1969, Thompson ran a 500 lap Modified event. Bugsy Stevens all but sewed up his third consecutive NASCAR National Modified Championship as he took the win. A virtually unknown Richie Evans finished second and was followed by Dave Lape, Fred DeSarro, Bob Santos and Lou Lazzaro. In the Southland, Ray Hendrick won both ends of a twin bill for modifieds and late model sportsman at the Beltsville Speedway in Maryland. (That would be the 1969 Indian Summer Twin Classics at Beltsville)
NSSN race report as shared on WheelsOfSpeed.com .
I was at this race, with buddy, Frank and my Dad. Over 35 cars failed to make the field. It was amazing to see all the merchandise given to drivers and crews by local merchants and sponsors. Our talented Virginia drivers consistently beat the pants off the challengers from Georgia, the Carolinas and Alabama in these annual races. They were some of the best Late Model Sportsman races ever staged. The non-qualifiers were top notch cars most places.
